The numbers are staggering as we learn that humanity is responsible for a decrease in animal populations worldwide of 68% in the past 50 years.  At a time when more than 1 million animals are at risk of extinction, the links between human health and the health of the planet couldn’t be clearer, as evidenced by our current pandemic. Seventy percent of emerging viral diseases are caused by human/wildlife interface. The biggest issues facing the global community today are losses to biodiversity. Loss of wildlife affects ecosystems we all rely on to keep us healthy. Learn more about how elephants help preserve our natural world and why poaching, human-elephant conflict, and illegal trade is related to our own survival.

We hope this message finds you all safe from this pandemic that has swept the world with a vengeance! 
Elephanatics has taken part in a global campaign to #EndWildlifeMarkets and #EndCovid in conjunction with many other international organizations worldwide.
The wildlife markets in China are the prime suspect for the current pandemic that is killing people at an unprecedented rate and have been the cause of other pathological diseases such as SARS and MERS.

The Coronavirus or COVID-19 epidemic has prompted China to permanently ban the trade of wild animals as food, but, unfortunately, not for medicinal use. Pangolins are suspected as a potential Coronavirus host but it has not yet been determined exactly what has caused COVID-19. The decision to ban the trade in wildlife, however, does not ban trade for fur, medicine or research. 

“This creates potential loopholes for traffickers who may exploit the non-food exemptions to sell or trade live wildlife,” stated Wildlife Conservation Society.  There is a large trade in wildlife that is not related to consumption. Traditional Chinese Medicine is controlled by the government and pangolin scales are used widely in this medicine, which leaves room for illegal activity to take place due to the loophole in the ban. 

The cruelty and conditions in which animals are subjected to in wildlife markets are beyond horrific. Placed in cages for days and mixed together with open sores and wounds and then killed on-site with their blood mixing are all cause for infectious diseases to manifest and propagate.
The link between wildlife markets, illegal wildlife trade, and Traditional Chinese Medicine are synonymous and cohesive in effect. Trafficking of wildlife and their body parts and their use as medicines must end to prevent further pandemics and for the prevention of extinction, especially of the pangolin that is the most trafficked animal in the world. By ending these markets you will be assisting in preventing poaching and curbing the illegal wildlife trade.

Donation Recipient #2: Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary
The future of Cambodia’s elephant population is dire. There are only 400 wild and 75 captive elephants. When elephant riding was banned at Angkor Wat, Kulen took in all 14 of these over-worked and tired pachyderms. Now they roam free in a protected forest of 1,100 acres where the sanctuary resides.
Outgoing and active Chi Mean (40 years) and curious, dominant Chi Ole (37) are best friends at Kulen. They were caught from the wild and worked together in a village and then Angkor Wat. Now happily retired, these two gals are inseparable. At Kulen they are allowed to sleep beside each other, so literally spend 24/7 together which they love.
Elephanatic’s donation of $2,000 will feed Chi Mean and Chi Ole, as well as the two other lady elephants they hang out with, for one month.

More than 500,000+ people have signed our petition to the Canadian government asking to ban the domestic trade of elephant ivory in Canada. Help us get to 500,000 signatures. Please sign and share our petition far and wide.

The ongoing slaughter of African elephants for their tusks has decimated elephant populations. Today, this magnificent animal is highly endangered and on the brink of extinction. Since 1980, the number of elephants in Africa has fallen from 1.3 million to just over 400,000. Currently, an estimated 20,000 elephants are killed every year for their ivory. At this rate, they will be erased from the wild in our lifetime.

Countries that have banned the domestic sale of elephant ivory within their borders, or are in the process of doing so, include China, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Belgium, Luxembourg, and several states in the United States. The Canadian government has not complied as yet. Shockingly, Canada is directly contributing to the destruction of one of the planet’s largest, most intelligent and most iconic species by keeping its elephant ivory market open for business!

Canada also legally permits elephant trophies to be imported. Between 2007 and 2016, Canada allowed the importation of 83 trophy elephants, 434 elephant skulls and 260 elephant feet.

The following organizations are working together as a coalition to act in concert to end the legal trade in elephant ivory in Canada: Elephanatics, Humane Society International-Canada; World Elephant Day; Global March Elephants and Rhinos – Toronto; and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. Please join the Ivory-Free Canada coalition and tell our government to end the legal domestic trade of elephant ivory. Look for our campaign – #IvoryFreeCanada.

Elephanatics would like to recognise the 95 Canadian and international animal advocacy organisations, Members of the BC Legislature and Parliament of Canada, scientists and environmentalists who co-signed our letter to the Canadian government. The #ivoryfreecanada letter was sent on March 14, 2018 and urged the government for a ban on the import, export, re-export and domestic trade of all elephant ivory.

Some of the signatories include BC SPCA, International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, Big Life Foundation, Born Free, World Elephant Day, Stop Ivory and African Wildlife Foundation. Noted elephant research scientists Dr Richard Leakey, Dr Caitlin O’Connell-Rodwell, Dr Joyce Poole and Dr Cynthia Moss also put their name to the letter.

We are gratified for the support of all the signatories – particularly the elephant community around the world. The signatories did not stop at just signing the letter. The Elephant Protection Initiative also sent a letter echoing our requests to the Canadian government. Most groups highlighted the #ivoryfreecanada campaign on their facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Some also featured it on their websites, e-newsletters and press releases to the media.

This kind of campaign cannot be successful without the backing of these noted organisations and individuals. We also cannot show the government that an ivory ban is wanted by the majority of Canadians without the support of the public. Enclosed with our letter to government is a link to our online petition. It has garnered over 130,000+ signatures and is growing every minute!
